Story of the school

emlyon business school was founded in 1872 by the Lyon Chamber of Commerce and Industry and celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2012. Throughout its history, the school has remained true to its origins: entrepreneurial, innovative and humanist.

The new Ecully campus was inaugurated in 1972 during the school's centenary celebrations. The following forty years were marked by rapid expansion and the launch of new and exciting projects. The first dual degree was created in 1978 and an initial network of French and international schools formed around the innovative concept. The Entrepreneurs Centre, the precursor of the Incubator, opened its doors 1984 and the China course was created in 1994. In 2005, emlyon business school received one of its most distinguished awards when it was given its third and final significant international accreditation from AACSB.

emlyon business school has a reputation that extends well beyond French borders. As a result, the number of applicants rocketed in 2011, reaching record levels. The school celebrated its 140th anniversary during the 2012-2013 academic year.

The school is determinedly focused on the future and innovation, and so it launched a new strategic plan in 2015 called New Territories 2020. The strategy will enable emlyon business school to become of one of the three or four French management schools with a global reputation operating worldwide.

The school’s identity is now closely linked to the early maker concept. Being a maker today means taking your destiny in hand and being the driver and entrepreneur of your own existence. This concept reflects our vision of an entrepreneur as someone who tries, experiments, makes mistakes, starts again, and learns as they go.
