At the heart of Asia
EM LYON is gradually expanding all its activities in China: from the Grande Ecole to Executive Education, a whole range of programmes and services is being put in place to support the development of European businesses in China. This approach aims to be bilateral; enabling various international participants to learn about the economic and entrepreneurial realities of China and Asia, and allowing Asian participants to understand European managerial realities.

Educating Chinese students in China
Master of Business Administration in Canton
The arrival of EM LYON in China dates back to 1997, when the DESS Commerce extérieur Asia Orientale (East Asian Masters Degree in Foreign Trade) was jointly launched by the IAE Lyon III (Lyon University Institute of Business Administration) and Lingnan College, part of Sun Yat Sen University in Canton.
This Masters Degree has recently become a “Master of Business Administration”, and is one of the only entirely French speaking programmes in China. In 2004 it was awarded the title of “Best Masters Degree in South China” by the Chinese Ministry of Education.
Every year, around forty Chinese and French participants graduate from this programme.
France-China MBA in Shanghai
As part of a consortium of the Grandes Ecoles in Rhône-Alpes, EM LYON also contributes to an MBA programme offered by the Municipality of Shanghai, by sending a lecturer to teach courses in e-business.
Educating Chinese students in Europe
The Shanghai office opened in 2000, in order to select outstanding Chinese students and to integrate them into the University’s programmes (MSc in Management, Specialised Masters, Master in European Business) and the International MBA.
Twenty to thirty top quality Chinese students are selected every year, and at the end of their education, comprising a high proportion of professional experience, they form a pool of potentially high-flying Chinese executives, who are:
- Bi-cultural
- Mainly tri-lingual: French, English, Chinese
- Highly-skilled from the day they take up their functions
Educating Chinese executives
A specific programme for Chinese executives with a great deal of potential
The specific “Advanced Management Programme” has been developed in cooperation with a number of French groups operating in China. It is designed for Chinese executives with a high level of potential and focuses on developing their skills in terms of leadership and team management by narrowing the cultural gap between them and their head offices. In May 2005, the programme brought together participants from groups including Air France, Arkema, Alcatel, Lafarge, Roquette, etc.
Development of tailor-made programmes for companies
Contacts have been made with numerous companies in order to develop tailor-made programmes.
A strategic partnership with Fudan University
Fudan University is a centre of excellence, and EM LYON has concluded a strategic partnership agreement with the Institute of Economics covering:
> the joint development of specialised MBA programmes (January 2007)
> the development of programmes for local and international businesses (Autumn 2006 and May 2007)
> the organisation of training modules, part of a worldwide cooperation programme between establishments
> the creation of a research centre to study entrepreneurship in Asia
Cooperation with other prestigious Chinese universities
Alongside this strategic partnership with Fudan, EM LYON organises exchanges of MBA students with the CEIBS in Shanghai, as well as wider cooperation in the field of entrepreneurship.
Various projects with other Chinese universities and outstanding business schools are also being discussed: Zhejiang University - entrepreneurship, Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business - MBA programme. New exchange agreements will soon be signed with Tongji University and Jiaotong University.
Creating and nurturing a network of “lifelong learning”
This network, of which comprising a majority of former alumni and participants in programmes associated with EM LYON take part, now has around 350 registered members in China.
It was launched in January 2005 in front of 160 people, and set itself a number of objectives:
> networking activity between its members,
> organisation of events including round tables, conferences and lunches examining important topics for executives in China,
- “The new Chinese consumer” with Accor, Unilever and Ikea in May 2005,
- “Entrepreneurship and ethics in China”: 4 Chinese entrepreneurs and a professor of entrepreneurship at EM LYON in September 2005,
- “Sustainable development: from theory to action, the example of companies in China” with Nokia, Rhodia and Veolia.
- “E-commerce in China”: attended by eBay, PayPal, Myetone and 2DuChe in September 2006.
All these conferences took place at Fudan University, in cooperation with the University’s alumni association.
> support for the development of EM LYON in China and in Asia.
This network has been supported since November 2005 by a “Club Chine” (Chinese Club) within the Association des Diplômés d’EM LYON (Alumni Association) in France, which was officially launched in February 2006.
