Publications & Research
Main research activities
Finalised or on-going projects in the chronological order.
" Exploratory research on social determinants of entrepreneurial behaviours among French Engineers. Following a profound bibliographic analysis, the research itself consisted of a qualitative case study based on a sample of 20 cases of Engineers entrepreneurs (1991-1992).
" Research identifying the element of influence (positive or negative) on Engineer's entrepreneurial interest. This work, integrated in my PhD work, is based on source material provided by l'INSEE (The French National Scientific Research Centre) concerning 35.000 Engineers, out of which 6% are entrepreneurs. I also carried out my own interviews on a sample of 700 Engineers, out of which about 200 were entrepreneurs (1992-1996).
" Research on what made the Engineers to undertake business activities. Identification and characterisation of different profiles of entrepreneur-engineers. Correlation between the profiles and perceived entrepreneurial behaviour, as well as study on company forms (1992-1996).
" Research on the differences and similarities between entrepreneurial behavioural structures and situations and characteristics of innovating and technological companies. On-going partnerships with European Universities of Technology, mainly with Eindhoven and Darmstadt. A French-Tunisian research programme started-up between l'ENIT and the University of Tunis (2003 - ).
" Research on Education and entrepreneurship in France : providing information about operators, policies and programmes, allocated resources, pedagogic approaches and the effects on the socio-economic level (1998-).
" Research on the processes of start-up of technological and innovating enterprises. This work aims at defining the subject of entrepreneurship in a new way and developing our own methodology and instruments of observation of entrepreneurial processes (1999-). Founding technological and innovative enterprises constitutes a special form of entrepreneurship. I kept it as the main source of study because of the high degree of change that such a new invention implies on the level of an individual undertaker (mostly Engineer) and on the level of the milieus in question. For the purposes of this project, I have set up a research group, EPI (Entrepreneurship and innovative processes), a partnership between UPMF and INPG. The team works under the authority of CERAG (UMR / CNRS) and the project has been incorporated in the four-year plans of two institutes for the period of 2003-2006. EPI just got the label of Equipe de Recherche Technologique (ERT (=Technological Research Team) from the French Ministry of Research.
" Research on emergence and development factors for biotechnological start-ups in four European regions, in partnership with two research centres, with Belgian university researchers (2004 - ).

Devenir Entrepreneur, Des Enjeux aux Outils
Alain Fayolle
